Malta, Montana
Had an awesome ride into Glacier National Park. We stopped along the way and did a little white water rafting. Jeff almost fell out twice which made everyone in the boat laugh. Glacier was amazing. We saw mountain goats, big horn sheep, and deer. A few people saw a small grizzly bear just down the bike trail from our campsite. I think we smelled too bad for it to come near us. Ran into two guys (Richard and Richard) who are biking from New Hampshire and Massachusetts to the west coast. Really nice guys, the one Richard is from Rhode Island and has some great lines that Soule will be trying out along our trip. We camped and ate with them and then headed out of the park and into Browning. At Browning they were having the 57th annual North American Indian Days Pow Wow. There were hundreds of Indian Nations there. We stayed up late watching the Blackfoot Chicken Dance and were awoken at 5 am to the sounds of the ritual drums. Good shots of us camped out near some tepees. The route is getting flatter so we are averaging more miles and going a bit faster especially when we have the wind to our backs. We really look forward to big breakfasts and to maybe getting in a shower or two this week.

Hey, Gearheads ~ YIPES! I hope we aren't too late since you are making great time and milage; you must be near the state line now and may want to try this, call it plan B: as you cross the state line into West Dakota look for sign County Road 5. If you follow this paved road 10 miles it will lead you to the stunning Ft. Union Trading Post, ca:1820 (ask for Randy, the Chief Ranger) 701-572-9083; there are signs indicating Ft Union and Ft Buford. While this is 10 miles south of Rt 2, your presumed route, you may find it a great and minor diversion. 2 miles further east and 1 more mile south, toward the river, is Ft. Buford, ca:Indian Wars and here they offer primitive camping with water, pit toilet and tables; I would suggest stopping @ Ft Union first, hrs: 8-8and free, then Ft. Buford State Historic Site, hrs:8-6, $5 fee. Lots of mosquitoes in the area right now. Then you can take Rt 1804 back up to Rt 2 toward Williston and points east and not backtrack. You will be at the junction of the Yellowstone and Missouri Rivers here. Glad you made it to a powwow and we look forward to your next posting. Keep pushing this lovely weather ahead of you because we love it. Hope you've had no complications, glad you can entertain the tourists, but remember that those lines you learned from Richard may have already been used on locals and they may have long memories of words if not faces; how fast can you pedal? Stay safe and eat your veggies. ~ TeamFamilySpandex
Hope you're having beautiful weather and a great ride. If passing thru La Crosse area there are some great bike trails but some years ago they had user fees; if passing thru they may waive that and if you are sticking just to the roads then this is a moot point, isn't it? So, how about those Packers this year?... It is fairly warm in this area now but we feel a front coming so you keep pushing it along. If following the other Le Tour, the kid from Isle of Man is the rising star, even if he doesn't have the yellow jersey (yet). He has won 3 stages, first Brit in 30 yrs. Thursday they were avg'g ~35mph! Are you keeping a speed log, are you realing ripping across the Northern Plains, making the wheat swirl as you pass? See any antelope, race any?? Make sure you change your socks each day (upwind) and remember your prayers each night. ~ TeamSunBurn
