Chicago
We are in the home of the Cubs, we know because we saw the "Save Ferris" sign on Wrigley Field when we pulled in. We rode straight through Minnessota and Wisconsin and into Illinois. We had a few great nights of sleep, one of which was on a beach along the St. Croix River when we crossed over in Prescot, Wisconsin. Some folks (Paul, Jeff, and Marilyn) at a local restaurant Muddy Waters took care of us and set us up on their friend's beach for the night. It was awesome. We rode 120 miles from Prescot to La Crosse where we stayed with Marcus and Jamie, two college students we ran into earlier in the trip in Washington. They were biking to the west coast and told us to stop by if we were in the area. They took us in, made us tacos, gave us a place to crash, and then fixed us a great breakfast to power us on the road. We managed to find some big hills in Wisconsin and to our dismay, we had to battle the wind yet again. I am convinced that the wind gods have it out for us on this trip. We are staying with two guys, Lloyd and Adam, from Jeff's unit out in Hawaii here in Chicago and have taken a day off to see the sights. Oh, something crazy, I ran into a TC grad out here in Havard, Illinois. He was out visiting his grandmother and just happened to be at the gas station we stopped at. It's a pretty small country after all. We are off to Indiana and then on to Cleveland and Buffalo.

You fellows pedal faster than some of us type, and I think you know who we mean...
It's all about timing - if you were a bit sooner, maybe 5 years, you could have stayed with family who used to live right in Eastlake, right along what we guess is your route (#283??). Ah, what might have been... But no matter, when you are gliding along the lovely Lake Erie shore thru Ohio and into PA you will be in the land of delicious fresh peaches and other wonderful and filling fruits now in season; oh we envy you. Lots of fruit and veggie stands along Rts 5 and 20 in PA (your choice, we guess) and PA wine country. If you pass thru Erie itself you may want to divert slightly east of town to the entrance to Presque Isle Peninsula where there is the great Waldamere waterslide Park and across the road is the Ridge Environmental Ctr (TREC), a neat place, especially the 3-story mechanical whirlygig just inside the doors; may be free but we're sure you two will sweet talk them even into contributing to your causes. If an option we would recommend you ride the new Bayfront Expressway where you'll find the Maritime Museum, home of the Brig Niagara (war of 1812) and outside town a real nice ice cream stop, Blue Moon, again on Rt 5 if that your choice (nice shoulders). A word of caution: if camping be aware of deer ticks in this greater area. But at least there are no headwinds of record. We have other contacts in Erie, could offer you a safe-house overnight if you play your cards right; any idea when you might be in that area?
Don't gulp your food.
